Our History, Our People

​​​​​​​Our trophy cabinet holds more than just awards. Each trophy has a story behind it. Many of our trophies have been donated by players, families, clubs, schools, businesses and members of our wider netball community.

This page shares some of the history behind our trophies and the people who have contributed to Waiuku Netball Centre over the years. 

Coaching Awards

• Junior Coach – Young Wives’ Netball Club Trophy (1995)
  - Trophy was donated by the Young Wives’ Netball Club. Carla Curnow and Trish Chitty were both very involved in the Club.
  

• Senior Coach – Young Wives’ Netball Club Trophy (1995)
  - Trophy was donated by the Young Wives’ Netball Club.
  

• ​​​​​​​Overall Commitment to Coaching – Wallace Family Trophy (2007)
  ​​​​​​​- Donated by Maree Wallace, who gave many years of service to the Coaching Coordinator role.​​​​​
  

Umpire Awards

• Junior Umpire – R Holmes Cup (1976)
  - Roberta Holmes was a former President of Waiuku Netball.​​​​​​​
  

• ​​​​​​​Senior Umpire – Timmins Cup (1976)​​​​​​​
  - Noeline Timmins was a legend at Waiuku Netball and worked in the timekeeper’s office for many years. We still have her bell in the trophy cabinet. Family names associated with the trophy are Shearer and Foley.​​​​​​​
  

• ​​​​​​​Overall Umpire Commitment (1989)
  - This trophy was donated to acknowledge an umpire for their overall commitment. Not only to seasonal games, but also to representative and other fixtures.

Trophy Round Awards

• Premier – Coe Trophy (2015)
  - Judith and Tara Coe have given many years of service to umpiring for Waiuku Netball. Judith was also involved during her role as Sports Coordinator for Waiuku College.
  

• ​​​​​​​Premier Reserve – Wally Marriner Memorial Trophy (2015)
  - Donated by Isey Marriner of Glenbrook on behalf of the Marriner family.
  

• ​​​​​​​Grade 2 – Maxwell Family Trophy (2015)
  - Kathy Maxwell was a former Secretary for Waiuku Netball. Most of the family played netball and competed at all levels. Kathy was also an umpire and coach for Pukeoware Netball Club.

• ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Grade 3 – Knight Family Memorial Trophy (2015)
  - Billie Knight, a timekeeper and former umpire, and Tracey Phillips donated this award.

• ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Grade 4 – Netball Northern Region Trophy
  - This trophy is listed as the Netball Northern Region Trophy.
  

• ​​​​​​​Grade 5 – Noeline Ramsey Patroness Trophy (2015)
  - Donated by Noeline Ramsey.
  

• ​​​​​​​Grade 6 – Hogg Family Trophy (2015)
  - Jean and Eleanor Hogg donated this award. Jean was a former player, and Eleanor (Kitching) has been an integral part of Waiuku Netball Centre for many years, offering her services to our umpires, Management Committee and Counties Manukau Netball Board
  

• Grade 7 – Castaway Trophy (2015)
  - Donated by Castaways Resort, Karioitahi Beach.
  

• Grade 8 – Waiuku Thrillseekers Trophy
  ​​​​​​​- Waiuku Golden Oldies was established in a year that is currently unknown in our records. Nancy Murphy, Dorothy Collie, Wonnie Churchill, Carol Herewini, Doris Robbie, Erron Leonard, Gwen Saunderson and Noeline Ramsey are among the founding members of the Golden Oldies Team.

Most Improved Player Awards

• Premier – Salients Club Cup (1975)
  - The Salients Club donated this cup for the Most Improved Player of our Premier A Grade. The records note that the Salients Club was formed in 1980.
  

• Premier Reserve – Ramsey Cup (1980)
  - Noeline and Marty Ramsey have been very involved with Waiuku Netball. Marty was always fixing things for the Centre, while Noeline’s service to Waiuku Netball continues today.
  

• Grade 2 – Mr & Mrs W Hogg Cup (1975)
  - Bill and Julie Hogg donated this trophy. Eleanor Kitching is their daughter.|
  

• Grade 3 – Browne-Cole Family Cup (2015)
  - Donated by Rachel Browne-Cole. Rachel has been a coach, selector and player for many years.
  

• Grade 4 – Hull Cup (1975)
  - Mary Hull donated this cup and it reflects her many years of service to Waiuku Netball. Jo Morriss is her daughter.
  

• Grade 5 – Jean Seegar Memorial Trophy (1975)
  - Noeline Ramsey is Jean’s daughter. This trophy acknowledges Jean’s service as Patron for Waiuku Netball.
  

• Grade 6 – Bignell Cup (1975)
  - Nancy Bignell was a former umpire for Waiuku Netball. Her daughters Kerry Collie and Sharon Frear both played for Waiuku Netball.
  

• Grade 7 – Fiona Clair Memorial Trophy (1984)
  - Fiona Clair Buckle played netball for Pukeoware and was killed in a car accident. Fiona loved frogs, which inspired the trophy donated by her family for a Most Improved Player.
  

• Grade 8 – Doris Robbie Memorial Cup (1992)
  - Doris was a former Secretary for Waiuku Netball and one of the founding members of the Golden Oldies Netball Team. She was also a former player, representative coach and manager.
  

• Grade 9 – Waiuku Netball Centre Trophy (2003)
  - This trophy is listed in our records as the Waiuku Netball Centre Trophy.
  

• Future Ferns – Kentish Frenz Trophy (1989)
  - Kentish Frenz was a successful club playing for Waiuku Netball for many years.
  

• Future Ferns GK – Carrie Sue Shackleton Memorial Trophy (1986)
  ​​​​​​​- Carrie lost her life to cancer as a nine-year-old. Despite having cancer and losing an arm, Carrie continued to play netball and excelled as a GK for Sandspit Netball Club.

Knockout Awards

• Premier – Colleen Gleeson Memorial Trophy (1975)
  - Gleeson and Cox was a local trucking business, and this trophy was donated by the Gleeson family.
  

• Premier Reserve – Amalgamation Cup (1980)
  - This trophy was repurposed. It was initially a trophy from when Pukekohe and Waiuku Netball Centres combined for a competition in the A Grade.
  

• Grade 2 – Hogg Cup (1975)
  - Julie Hogg was a former team manager for our Representative teams for many years.
  

• Grade 3 – Walker Cup (1976)
  - Pam Brighouse is the daughter of Alan and Nola Walker. The families were involved in Waiuku Netball.
  

• Grade 4 – Tait Family Trophy (1975)
  - The records note that a member of the Tait family was a former umpire and donated this trophy. The first name is currently unknown in our records.
  

• Grade 5 – Waiuku Netball Cup (1975)
  - This trophy is listed in our records as the Waiuku Netball Cup.
  

• Grade 6 – Waiuku Netball Cup (1975)
  - This trophy is listed in our records as the Waiuku Netball Cup.
  

• Grade 7 – Otaua Jubilee Cup (1975)
  - This cup was donated following the Jubilee Celebration of the Otaua Club. Wonnie Churchill and Mary Hull were involved with the Otaua Club.
  

• Grade 8 – Presidents Cup (1992)
  - Mary Hull donated this trophy. Jo Morriss is her daughter.
  

• Grade 9 – Waiuku Netball Centre Trophy (2003)
  - This trophy is listed in our records as the Waiuku Netball Centre Trophy.
  

• Future Ferns – View Road School Netball Club Trophy (1979)
  - Donated by the View Road School Netball Club.

Competition Awards

• Premier – Frank Jakeman Trophy (1975)
  - The Jakeman family have always been well respected within the Waiuku Netball Centre. The family is still represented through the Herewini and Piki Jakeman families. Doris Robbie, daughter of Frank and Violet Jakeman, was a former Secretary for Waiuku Netball. Lani Herewini is a great-grandchild of Frank and Violet Jakeman.
  

• Premier Reserve – Misa Cup (1980)
  - Mary Misa was a former President of Waiuku Netball. Her daughter Diana played for Waiuku before moving North. Christine Misa is Mary’s daughter-in-law.
  

• Grade 2 – Hunter Family Trophy (2015)
  - Yvonne Hunter, mother of Sheryl and Diana, donated this trophy. All had previously played netball for Waiuku.
  

• Grade 3 – Gwen Saunderson Cup (1976)
  - Gwen Saunderson donated this trophy. Gwen played and umpired netball. Tracey Bracken is Gwen’s daughter and previously played netball.
  

• Grade 4 – S & E Kitching Cup (1975)
  - Donated by Stephen and Eleanor Kitching.
  

• Grade 5 – Conroy Family Cup (1975)
  - Anne Walters and Judith Coe are daughters of Les and Nola Conroy and have supported Waiuku Netball for many years.
  

• Grade 6 – Waiuku Netball Trophy (1975)
  - This trophy is listed in our records as the Waiuku Netball Trophy.
  

• Grade 7 – Golden Oldies Trophy (1975)
  - The Waiuku Thrillseekers Golden Oldies Netball Team donated this award. Nancy Murphy, Dorothy Collie, Wonnie Churchill, Carol Herewini, Doris Robbie, Erron Leonard, Gwen Saunderson and Noeline Ramsey are among the founding members of the Golden Oldies Team.
  

• Grade 8 – Goodall Trophy (1991)
  - Julia Goodall was a former umpire at Waiuku Netball Centre.
  

• Grade 9 – Waiuku Netball Centre Trophy (2003)
  - This trophy is listed in our records as the Waiuku Netball Centre Trophy.
  

• Future Ferns – Collie Cup (1979)
  - Dorothy Collie was a former President of Waiuku Netball. Maree Wallace is her daughter, while Karina Grayson, Lauretta Wallace and Allana Wallace are granddaughters, and Lily Wallace-Curnow and Hailey Foote are great-granddaughters.

Proficiency Awards

• Junior Points – St Anthony’s Cup (1979)
  - St Anthony’s Catholic Church supported the donation of this trophy. It is awarded each year for points gained for correct uniform, no jewellery, punctuality and sportsmanship for teams in the Junior competition. Trish Chitty has always been associated with the church
  

• Senior Points – National Bank Trophy (1986)
  - The National Bank donated this trophy. It is awarded each year for points gained for correct uniform, no jewellery, punctuality and sportsmanship for teams in the Senior competition.
  

• Junior Goal Average – Julia Brighouse Memorial Cup (1975)
  - The Brighouse family were known to Waiuku Netball. Wonnie Churchill was a Brighouse.
  

• Senior Goal Average – Carla Curnow Memorial Trophy (2003)
  - Carla lost her life to cancer in 2003 and was a founding member of the Young Wives Netball Club. Carla played and umpired for Waiuku Netball. Carla’s granddaughter is Lily Wallace-Curnow and her nieces are the Chitty girls. Trish Chitty was Carla’s sister.
  

• Premier Goal Average – Ohaunui Roses One Hour Rosebowl (1986)
  - Donated by Nancy Murphy, a previous President of Waiuku Netball. Nancy also coached many umpires to a high level during her time with Waiuku Netball.
  

• Junior Uniform – Patrons Cup (1984)
  - Waiuku Netball acknowledged the Patrons with this award.
  

• Senior Uniform – Jubilee Cup (1982)
  ​​​​​​​- This trophy was purchased to acknowledge the Waiuku Netball Jubilee.

Special Awards

• Collegiate Sporting Achievement – Bill Churchill Memorial Cup (1994)
  
  The Churchill family donated this trophy. Wonnie Churchill and Nicola are still involved with Waiuku Netball.

  At the request of the family, this trophy is awarded to the collegiate person or team who achieves the highest honours within the Waiuku Netball Centre. The achievements may be for playing, coaching or umpiring.
  

• Ian Smith Endeavour Cup (1991)
  
  Ian Smith was a local businessman who donated this award.
  
  ​​​​​​​At the request of the family, this trophy is awarded to the team or person who endeavours to put every effort into the game and therefore assists with the development of netball in our Centre.
  

• Junior Aptitude Trophy (1989)
  
  This cup is awarded to a Junior team that may not win the most points, but puts a lot of effort into a game. It recognises players who always turn up and whose sportsmanship is there whether they win or lose.
  

• Te Puawai Trophy (2022) – ‘To Blossom’ Award
  
  Donated by Tyler Campbell, FutureFERNS Coordinator.
  
  The recipient of this award displays fair play, has a positive attitude towards the game and is developing good foundation skills.

• Operation Build-Up Trophy (1984)
  
  This trophy is awarded to the team, player or personnel who goes beyond the call of duty to assist with the growth and development of Waiuku Netball.
  

• Voigt Family Trophy (2022) – Volunteer of the Year
  
  Kim and Russell Voigt donated this trophy. It reflects the energy that Kim has put into looking after our Volunteers at Waiuku Netball.

Our History, Our People

These trophies are a small part of the history of Waiuku Netball Centre. Behind each name is a person, family, club or organisation that has helped build and support netball in our community.

We are proud to recognise those contributions and continue their legacy through the players, coaches, umpires and volunteers who are part of Waiuku Netball today.
